An online relationship may begin with photographs, a profile and a conversation. For a foreign client, however, it can be difficult to know whether the photographs actually belong to the person communicating with you.

A photograph may appear on more than one website or may have been published under different names. It can sometimes be associated with a public social-media account, dating profile, modelling page, professional profile or another publicly accessible source.
Finding the same image elsewhere does not automatically prove fraud. A person may legitimately use the same photograph on several accounts. The significance depends on the names, locations, dates, stories and other information connected with the image.

A picture-based review may be useful when you are communicating with someone you met through online dating, considering sending money, planning an international meeting, considering marriage, reviewing an unexpected financial request, concerned that photographs may have been copied, or trying to understand whether different online profiles may belong to the same person.

A useful image investigation goes beyond asking whether one exact photograph appears in a basic search result.
Depending on the material provided and publicly available information, research may consider variations of an image, associated names, profile information, public social-media accounts and other online references connected with the photograph.
Older pages, regional websites and profiles with different names can sometimes provide important context. At the same time, many photographs leave no publicly searchable trail, so the absence of a match does not prove that an identity is genuine.
One significant warning sign is when substantially identical photographs appear with different names, locations or personal stories.
Such a finding deserves careful examination. It may indicate a copied profile, stolen photographs, an impersonation account or another explanation that should be clarified before you rely on the profile.
We report the evidence found rather than automatically labelling the person a scammer.
International online dating creates a particular verification problem: you may have extensive correspondence with someone while still having very little independently verified information about that person.
Photographs can create a strong sense of familiarity, but they are not proof of identity. A person may use genuine photographs while presenting false information about her name, location, occupation, relationship status or circumstances.
If the relationship has reached the point where money, property, travel, marriage or another significant commitment is being discussed, image verification should normally be considered only one part of a broader assessment.
Depending on the case, available material may be compared for consistency, including photographs, names associated with photographs, public profile information, locations stated in different profiles, publicly visible social-media accounts, dates and contextual information, and other information that can lawfully be connected to the images.
The more independent information available, the easier it may be to distinguish a meaningful match from a coincidence.
One clear photograph may be enough to begin an investigation. Several photographs are generally more useful because they allow different images to be compared and can reveal whether the same person appears consistently across public sources.
If you only have one image, it can still be reviewed. The result simply needs to reflect the limitations of the available evidence.
If an image is connected to a public social-media profile, that profile may provide useful context. However, a social-media account should not automatically be treated as proof of identity either.
Public profiles can be copied, impersonated or abandoned. A credible assessment therefore considers the relationship between the photograph, account history, names, dates, locations and other available information.
A picture-based investigation should not be confused with an official identity determination or a biometric identification service.
We do not claim that a photograph alone can establish a person's legal identity with certainty. Instead, we examine publicly available and lawfully obtained information connected with the image and explain the strength and limitations of any apparent match.
If the same photograph is found under another name, do not immediately send additional money or disclose more private information.
Preserve the original photograph, profile URL, messages and relevant correspondence. Keeping the original material can be important if the situation later develops into a financial dispute or another legal matter.
The appropriate next step may include additional identity verification, documentary checks, relationship due diligence or legal advice.
A request for money should be assessed separately from the question of who appears in a photograph.
Even when a photo is linked to a genuine person, that does not establish that an emergency story, loan request, travel expense, medical request, investment proposal or other financial request is legitimate.
Where substantial funds are involved, a broader legal risk assessment may therefore be more useful than a photo-only check.
If an online relationship is progressing toward marriage, shared property, financial support or another major commitment, independent information can become increasingly important.
A photograph review can help identify obvious inconsistencies at an early stage. It should not replace legal advice concerning marriage, property, contracts, financial obligations or other consequences of the proposed commitment.
For an initial assessment, provide the clearest photograph available and explain why you want it reviewed.
Additional material may include other photographs, dating-profile links, public social-media links, screenshots showing the person's name or location, and relevant correspondence where the identity question is connected with money, travel, marriage or another significant matter.
Please provide material that you are legally entitled to share. Do not obtain private accounts or restricted information through unauthorized access.
Depending on the available evidence, a picture-based report may identify credible public profiles using the same photograph, different names associated with substantially identical images, apparent links to public professional or social-media accounts, indications that an image has been widely reused, inconsistencies requiring further investigation, or the absence of enough information to make a reliable identification.
A responsible result should distinguish between an established match, a possible match and an inconclusive search.
A photograph cannot by itself prove that someone is honest, that a relationship is genuine, that a person is financially trustworthy or that a story told online is accurate.
